Unislamic Responses To An Obscure Film (தமிழிலும்)

leave a comment »

Allah says in The Noble Qur’an (3:186)

You shall certainly be tried and tested in your wealth and properties and in your personal selves, and you shall certainly hear much that will grieve you from those who received the Scripture before you and from those who ascribe partners to Allah, but if you persevere patiently, and become Al-Muttaqun (the pious) then verily, that will be a determining factor in all affairs, and that is from the great matters, [which you must hold on with all your efforts]

Reactions against the insult directed at Holy Prophet Muhammad were legal and were things desired. This is a necessity of our faith. Defending the Holy Prophet Muhammad is a desirable Islamic behaviour. However, a Muslim must act based on the Islamic law and directives issued by the Holy Prophet Muhammad. We should not be acting in opposition to our Prophet Muhammad while thinking that we are defending him” – Statement from An-Nusra Al-Alamiya organization led by Yusuf al-Qaradawi

Most Muslims in the West seem to have displayed a mature and islamically acceptable response to the film “Innocence Of Muslims”. See the article Forget About “Not In My Name,” Think Of Your Own Name

Ideal Protest: Youths distribute book on Prophet Muhammad outside American Center (twocircles.net)

The response of some Muslims in Middle-East, North Africa and India goes against the teachings of Islam, and irrational. Killing an Ambassador (Libya), damaging the embassies (Egypt & Yemen), laying seize to the US Consulate and stoning the glass panes (Chennai, TMMK protest), blocking the traffic (and ambulances) for over 2 hours and demonstrating with brooms – yes, the ones used to sweep / clean – (Chennai TNTJ protest) are some of the responses from Muslims who are more emotional than knowledgeable about the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

When asked about the reason, one of the protestors responded, “What would you do if someone ridicules / scolds your father?”. To begin with, comparing insults to our fathers with insults to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is nonsensical. In any case, the decent people may forgive or advise the person who scolded our fathers. The angrier people may even slap the guy. Now, are you going to slap or harm the person who produced that film? No. You are only harming the US embassy staff, local police, and common men & women in the streets.

Most importantly, what was Prophet’s response when he was ridiculed? Anyone who claims to love the Prophet, and anyone who claims to follow the Quran and Sunnah should DO what Prophet DID.

Narrated ‘Aisha: (the wife of the Prophet) A group of Jews entered upon the Prophet and said, “As-Samu-Alaikum.” (i.e. death be upon you). I understood it and said, “Wa-Alaikum As-Samu wal-la’n. (death and the curse of Allah be upon you).” …

Allah’s Apostle said “Be calm, O ‘Aisha! Allah loves that one should be kind and lenient in all matters.”

I said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Haven’t you heard what they (the jews) have said?” Allah’s Apostle said “I have (already) said (to them) “And upon you!” (Bukhari Book #73, Hadith #53)

Questions to ponder:

For all those protesting vehemently, here are three questions:

1. Do you know the answers to the questions posed by non-Muslims about the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). For example, how do you explain the Prophet’s marriage to Ayisha (RA) when she was 9 year-old? [Answer: http://wp.me/pmMJ0-5M ] Or, how do you explain the Prophet’s intent to raid a caravan of Quraysh heading to Makkah (which led to the battle of Badr)? [Answer: The Noble Life of the Prophet (pbuh) by Dr. Ali Muhammad As-Sallaabee]

2. What have you done to convey the real life and teachings of the Prophet you claim to love the most?

3. What proof from Quran and Sunnah that you have to damage others’ properties, and blocking the traffic?

Forms of Response to provocation:

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr (RA): The Prophet (pbuh) said,

“A Muslim is the one who avoids harming Muslims with his tongue and hands. And a Muhajir (emigrant) is the one who gives up (abandons) all what Allah has forbidden.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 2: Belief)

Allah says in The Noble Qur’an (23:96)

Repel evil with that which is better. We are Best-Acquainted with the things they utter.

(நபியே!) நீர் அழகிய நன்மையைக் கொண்டு தீமையைத் தடுத்துக் கொள்வீராக! அவர்கள் வர்ணிப்பதை நாம் நன்கறிவோம்

Please see the Quranic verses 41:34,35, 13:22, 16:125, 28:54, and 29:46. If Prophet (pbuh) is your role model (and not other individuals, Organizations, or local Political parties) for all affairs, including how to express disgust, then please look to his life and teachings. Is the Prophet your role model only for some religious affairs, but not for all affairs?

1. Violence: What does this achieve? Who benefits from this?

2. Protests on the roads blocking traffic (The affected commuters would not only curse the protesters but also the object of the prophet, in this case Prophet Muhammad himself)

3. Peaceful protest inside a stadium, a church etc. No blocking the traffic. (Example: Around 2000 devotees protested police action at St. Antony’s shrine at Palayamkottai, Tamil Nadu on Saturday. Source: The Hindu Dt Sep 17, 2012)

4. Positive responses like “Share the Qur’an” campaign when a Florida pastor announced “Burn the Koran” campaign. This would make your enemies seethe with anger.

5.  The Best Response: Ignore them. Regularly convey the truth & lead the discussion with people of other faiths (or, no faith), rather than angrily responding to every provocation. Shouting on the streets is easier than doing da’wa. Responding to enemies saps your morale and energy (remember whack-a-mole?), and diverts you from focusing on critical / important duties. Do we want to be proactive or reactive?

Two ambulances, one rushing to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and the other to Apollo Hospital in Teynampet, were caught in the chaos. After over 30 minutes of maneuvering through traffic, the ambulances managed to move ahead with assistance from police personnel and some motorists.

The Untold History of the Khaleefas: Introduction

leave a comment »

Earlier Post: Judiciary in an ancient empire. Can you identify its leader?

The best people to convey Allah’s Guidance and commands were the prophets and messengers. The best & last of them was Muhammad (pbuh). We are not going to get any more. The next best (i.e. 2nd best) people in terms of understanding Allah’s Guidance and commands were the students of the final messenger (i.e. Companions, Sahabas). That is not just logical, but the final messenger himself told so. “The best of people is my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them”. [Bukhari and Muslim]

Nobody, in Islam, becomes “Best” without excellent knowledge. If anyone thinks that companions (Sahabas) were best in piety, worship & obedience but not in knowledge, then he doesn’t understand the importance of knowledge in Islam. He contradicts a Quranic verse “It is only those who have knowledge among His servants that fear Allah” (Qur’an 35:28). He also seem to ignore the Prophet’s sayings which instruct us to learn certain things from certain companions.

If any Aalim / Shaykh thinks that he has a better, smarter, or more knowledgeable way, here is a warning from Prophet himself: “And this Ummah will divide into seventy-three sects all of which except one will go to Hell and they (i.e. the Saved Sect) are those who are upon what I and My Companions are upon (i.e. those who follow My Way and the Way of my Companions.)” [Reported by at-Tirmidhee]

The best among the sahabas are the khaleefas (Caliphs, Khulafaa). Please see the attached file Follow the Khaleefas – Some hadeeths for hadiths ordering us to follow them. When you obey the Messenger (pbuh), you are actually obeying Allah (because, it is Allah who ordered us to obey His Messenger). When you follow the Khaleefas, you are actually following the Messenger (pbuh) (because it is the Messenger who ordered us to follow his Khaleefas). In other words, the status of the Messenger and his khaleefas come from the orders of Allah & His Messenger respectively.

{Optional: A few brothers have an understanding that Prophet told us to follow his successors only in political and administrative matters. This is an incorrect understanding. Those who have studied the history of fiqh wouldn’t say such a thing. Neither the Prophet, nor anyone from early generations nor the later Imams hinted anything like “follow them in political and administrative, but ignore their Islamic things”. They never distinguished religion from worldly affairs, like governance, politics. Also, there is nothing in the hadeeths restricting the applicability of those commands only to his companions. How can you & I, who live several generations after the successors, follow political and administrative decrees / rulings of Abu Bakr, Umar etc.

For those who say “We know Astronomy better than Sahabas”, the response is: Knowledge of Astronomy (or Medicine or engineering) doesn’t make a Muslim better or more deserving of Paradise. If it were the case, Muslims who would come in the future are better than us, because they’d have more knowledge of Astronomy than us. And, the best Muslims would be those who live closest to the Last Day. Is that the case? I can write more, but this should suffice for those who seek clarification.}

Clarification: Islamic Shariah comprises only Qur’an and Sunnah. We are not talking about adding “Sahabas” as a 3rd source of Shariah. We are also not talking about blindly following them (Taqleed). Prophet himself made a few mistakes (e.g.: ignoring the old blind companion while doing Da’wa, being lenient to the Badr prisoners of war, etc) and Allah corrected him. These mistakes don’t reduce the status of our Prophet (pbuh). The best sahabas made some mistakes too. Those mistakes don’t bring them down to our level. Those mistakes don’t make our Aalims equal to them.

Now, how do we follow khaleefas / caliphs when we don’t know about them? Some Muslims say that Khilafat is the solution to all of the community’s problems. They seek to establish caliphate system. Now, how could a good Khilafat be established when people know very little about the best Khalifas? Assuming if people get political power, what kind of government would they establish?

One academic mentioned the below to Dr. ‘Ali Muhammad As-Sallaabee, author of Prophet’s and Khaleefas’ biographies:

“There now exists a chasm between Muslims and the era of the rightly guided Khaleefas. The priority of the Muslims are out of whack, with many of them knowing a great deal about the lives of scholars from recent centuries, and comparatively little about the lives of the rightly guided khaleefas. To be sure, much can be learned from the era of rightly guided Khaleefas, for it was an era that was replete with lessons about just governance, sound economic policies, military heroics, good manners, Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) – and the necessary steps that must be taken in order to establish a stable, just, upright, and God-fearing society. These are the very lessons Muslims desperately need to learn about today”. What is the legacy of the Aalim / Shyakh / Imam we know, adore and follow?

The Khaleefas accomplished phenomenal success in many areas, despite limited resources and time. For example, Abu Bakr ruled the young nation just for 2 years & 2 months – his achievements last even now. He defeated Persia and Roman empires, rooted out apostasy from the Arabian Peninsula with an all-out assault against Apostates, and compiled Quran in one book. The areas they conquered (Egypt, Sudan, Morocco, Syria, Iraq etc) are still Muslim countries. The fact that rightly guided khaleefahs achieved accomplishments of astounding magnitude that continued until today is a living proof that Allah blessed their efforts because of their knowledge, piety, steadfastness, and hard work. They wanted to please only Allaah. They had no other agenda.

What is our agenda? Whom do we want to please? And, whose understanding of Qur’an and Hadeeths do we want to follow?

Insha Allah, i will try to post a few events and lessons from the lives of khaleefas, and some extracts from their letters and speeches

Hijra to Medina was for a greater cause

with 3 comments

Introduction:

The Hijra of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and his companions was a watershed event in the history of human enlightenment. It was a move from a closed-minded society to an open-minded, from a hostile people to warm-hearted people. This migration is not about escaping from persecution in Makkah. If it were, then the migration would be an end in itself. We will see why this is not the case.

Purpose of Hijra:

The goal of any Hijra in Islam is to find a place where Da’wah and Islamic practices can be done peacefully. In fact, Muslims shouldn’t live in places where they could not practice essential Islamic practices. Allah says in the Qur’an [Sura Nisaa]:

97. Verily! as for those whom the angels take (in death) while they are wronging themselves (as they stayed among the disbelievers even though emigration was obligatory for them), they (angels) Say (to them): “In what (condition) were you?” they reply: “We were weak and oppressed on earth.” they (angels) say: “Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for You to emigrate therein?” such men will find their abode In Hell – what an evil destination!
98. except the weak ones among men, women and Children who cannot devise a plan, nor are they Able to direct their way.

What does Allah say about the Migrants and Helpers?
In the following verse, Allah mentions some actions of the migrants (Muhajiroon).

(Sura Al-Anfaal Verse 72)

Verily, those who believed, and emigrated and strove hard and fought with their property and their lives in the Cause of Allah as well as those who gave (them) asylum and help, – These are (all) allies to one another…

This verse, which mentions what they did after emigration, is a clear proof that Hijra was not end in itself.

What happened in Madeena, after the Hijra?
Here are some events and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and his companions that led to the spread of Islam across the world, the establishment of an Islamic State, and the codification of laws for the society. The spreading of Islam and establishing the Islamic state are the real objectives (the end goals), and Hijra is a means to achieve these goals.

  • The laws on Zakath, Fasting, family, inheritance, trade etc were revealed in Madeena
  • The laws on Jihad as well as our relationship with non-Muslims were revealed here
  • Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) demonstrated the three core things to lay foundation of a society
    • Establishing Masjid
    • Removing tribal & racial affiliations of Muslims and establishing brotherhood between Ansar and Muhajir
    • A covenant/treaty establishing rights and responsibilities of all parties in Madeena
  • Send delegations to other rulers to invite them to Islam
  • Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and his companions demonstrated their commitment and sacrifices for the sake of Allah by waging many wars that were forced upon them

Conclusion:
It is clear from the events unfolded in Madeena that Hijra was really a means to the end goals of spreading Islam and establishing Allah’s Laws on earth. Hijra is a Sunnah of Allah, and many prophets before Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) have done that. The objective remains the same.

Note: This was an assignment paper for Seerah. Thought to share as this is the first month of Islamic calendar. Short Link: http://wp.me/smMJ0-hijra. Students, please don’t copy/paste, edit a few sentences and submit. Already some would have done that 🙂

Allegations on Marrying Young Aisha (Aysha, Ayesha)

with one comment

There are two categories of people who ask questions like, “Why did an older Mohamed marry an younger Aysha?”. The first category would like to know the answer, and the other one wants to provocate. The moment you answer their question, they will go to another question. Their objective is not seeking knowledge. Don’t bother about them, and spend your time wisely.

1. This age difference is raised as an issue only in our times and not during their times. It was a common practice at that time. Even 50 years ago, nobody asked this question, i.e. in the 1300+ years, even the diehard critics of the Prophet (pbuh) did not talk about this “age difference”. Neither the pagan Quraish nor the Jews of that time even thought of criticizing the Prophet for this, though tried their best to put down the Prophet’s message. People now live longer, get mature enough to handle a family much later than the earlier times

To understand a man, one needs to know his society. Sociologist Mills writes, “… The facts of contemporary history are also facts about the success and the failure of individual men and women. When a society is industrialized, a peasant becomes a worker; a feudal lord is liquidated or becomes a businessman. When classes rise or fall, a man is employed or unemployed;when the rate of investment goes up or down, a man takes new heart or goes broke. When wars happen, an insurance salesman becomes a rocket launcher; a store clerk, a radar man; a wife lives alone; a child grows up without a father. Neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both…” (MILLS, C. WRIGHT. 1959. The Sociological Imagination. Penguin)

2. Puberty was the nature’s dividing line between a girl and a woman. Biologically her body says “I am ready to be a mother”.  Even now the minimum age for consensual sex varies from 12 to 18

3. Was Ayesha affected/disturbed by this marriage? No. The condition of one who was abused is pathetic. On the contrary, she was a scholar & a foremost/prolific narrator of hadeeths (2,210 narrations). See her caliber, could she be a product of abuse? See the 10 minute video  for a detailed answer (“A beautiful love story”) on this

4. Judgment Problem : In the West, if two men hold hands they are considered gays / homosexuals. While in the Middle east or India, it indicates friendship. A US guy may look at this and cry “A bunch of homosexuals”, which is incorrect. A similar thing happens with Ayesha’s marriage. This marriage happened 1400 years ago, go back to that period and see it in its context
