Separate Eid Prayers on the same day

After Eid Prayer

Everybody loves to say “We need to unite”. But, there are reasons, events, causes that cause disunity. The first step to solve a problem is to understand and acknowledge the factors causing the problem. Refusing to accept that the problem exists, or ignoring it isn’t going to solve the problem. In fact, refusal to talk about disunity is only going to cause more divisions in the future. “A just war is better than an unjust peace”.

The Qur’an and Sunnah strongly advocate the unity of the community. While the division between the truth and falsehood is inevitable, no group should use that (truth vs falsehood) as a cover/alibi to divide the community for political, personal, monetary, or egoistic reasons.

This write-up is to convey two events to the good members and supporters of TNTJ – Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath. Please spend a few minutes to read, and if you have questions or if there is anything wrong, please let me know. When Muslims divide, their strength gets reduced. I’m not a current or former member of TMMK, JAQH, TNTJ, INTJ etc.

Allaah warns in Qur’an verse 8:46

and obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength departs

#1: More than two decades ago, the tawheed (thowheed, thowheeth) people of Kayal Patnam organized themselves under one umbrella. For several years, they invited speakers from various tawheed organizations and individual scholars, to speak after taraweeh (Ramadan lectures). Some years ago, they sent an invitation to TNTJ head quarters to send speakers. TNTJ replied that they were short of speakers (எங்களிடம் ஆட்கள் இல்லை – didn’t have speakers to send). In a few days, they announced their own Ramadan lectures. Since then, there are two simultaneous lectures during Ramadan nights from the tawheed group. Please note that the united community wanted the speakers from TNTJ. But they chose to break away from the community and started their own lectures. There is no Aqeedah differences, no disrespect to TNTJ, and no one expelled them.

#2: On 10th Sep 2010, most people in Tamil Nadu celebrated Eid. In Kayal Patnam, the tawheed people (Al Jamiul Azhar Jumma Masjid) announced that eid prayer would be held in the beach. The TNTJ folks held their eid prayer in a different area. When I asked a TNTJ member the reason for holding a separte prayer, the response was “The Jamiul Azhar management refused to display our notice for a rally”. So, they wanted to break away from those who didn’t “respect” them. Is that a valid reason to split the community?

Plese note that the Jamiul Azhar management includes some TNTJ members. And, the TNTJ members perform their regular and Jumu’a prayers in the same Jamiul Azhar. After performing the Eid prayers separately, they came to Jamiul Azhar on the same day for Jumu’a  / Jumma. Why give a weak & unconvincing reason for splitting the community? What exactly do they achieve by dividing the community?

Towards the end of my conversation with that TNTJ brother, I asked him “Assuming there is no TNTJ in Kayal Patnam, how many Eid prayers would be held on 10th Sep”. He replied ONE (at the beach). I said “So, the presence of TNTJ was the only reason for two Eid prayers in Kayal . Without them, we would all be one united community. TNTJ இல்லை என்றால் நமக்கு ஒரு தொழுகை தான்”.

My dear TNTJ brothers & sympathisers, please think about these. Don’t say சத்தியம், அசத்தியம், “this is truth vs falsehood”, while ego ஈகோ (“they didn’t respect us”, or “Only we have the correct Aqeedah and Fiqh” – நாங்கள் தான் சரியானவர்கள்), personal issues, or money (like Eid collection) is the real reason . Differences of opinions can’t be the reason for splitting or fighting. We should sit together and sort out differences. The companions (Sahabas), Tabieens, Imams etc had differences of opinions. They had political, fiqh and other differences. Students differed from their teachers (Major Imams). Did they pray separately, or avoid each other’s lectures / bayans?

Also, many times you have changed your opinions & fiqh rulings. When you know the correct things, you change your position / stand/ opinion. That’s the right thing to do. You don’t expel (or, break away from) those speakers/aalims who gave a mistaken fiqh ruling earlier. I hope you would consider the above events and various other events happening all over Tamil Nadu, and talk to the TNTJ leaders. You believe unity is important. Please stop them from spreading hatred and divisions among us.  If our Aqeedah is not much different, and if we both follow Qur’an and Sunnah, why should we have two Eid prayers on the same day?

If TNTJ members aren’t stopped from praying in a Masjid, and they don’t have irreconcilable Aqeedah problems with other people in the same masjid, why would TNTJ attempt to create another markaz/masjid? If this is not dividing the community, please let me know what is the meaning of division.

Another TNTJ supporter asked my friend “Is that (having two separate Eid prayers) a Shirk?”. You know how illogical this question is. Is celebrating Prophet’s Birthday மீலாத் நபி (Meelad Nabi) a shirk? Is reciting Qur’an on the 3rd or 40th day after a death (கத்தம், Katham) shirk? No.  So, why are we condemning them? Shirk isn’t the only thing condemned in Islam. Bid’ah, pride, arrogance, disunity and other vices are also  condemned. We are slaves of the God. We shouldn’t have closed minds and bloated egos. And, we should not be happy about divisions.

Allah says in Qur’an 30:32

of those who split up their Religion, and became sects, [i.e. they invented new things in the Religion, and followed their vain desires],each sect rejoicing in that which is with it

Q: Won’t this topic cause divisions in the Tawheed community?

A: The division already exists. People are already seeing that tawheed groups had separate prayers on the same Eid day. So, i am not splitting. The cause is the existing splits, the effect is this write-up

Feedback from a Director of a company:

“I greatly share your views and wish that those who happen to read your article support the cause of unity more and more in the days to come. My personal opinion is that, whether it is to do with the sunni {he meant Sunnat wal Jamath} or thowheed groups, the Ulema should not necessarily lead but only guide any group or party. The members of the group or the party, whatever you call it, should come under one leader who need not be an alim but must be a muthaqi {have Taqwa} and have the qualities of a good leader. All the members shall abide by his decisions. In that case, there would not be new groups or divisions or need for them”

His point is leadership must go to those who have leadership ability & ethics. That would also avoid further divisions.

Another Feedback:

I believe, these Towheed groups have caused more damage to Towheed followers than others. It is not just ego alone to be blamed for such happenings but much more. The money factor, Political powers and cultural backgrounds. Before a decade ago, families might have celebrated EID separately from their neighbors. But today I see almost every single Towheed family being disturbed by the  EID day. When guys can stand united to vote and retain Azhar, why can’t they spend some time to settle down the differences to have a united EID. Doesn’t Quran and Sunnah insist on unity?

  1. It is the inadequate knowledge of the so called “leaders” is one of the reasons for disunity among the ummah.. May Allah guide them and save the ummah from the misguided.

  2. Your comment good, but there is aqeedah difference between thowhid groups. for instance, TNTJ is of opinion God has shape, what about other groups? its basic aqeedath deviation.

    • There are differences within each group, and among (between) various groups. If we have to split away (or expel) for every aqeedah or fiqh difference, then everyone of us will be a separate group. In any case, can the difference you specified be the reason to go away from the community, and start a new masjid?

  3. Asalaam Alaikum,
After reading your article. I really got inquisitive to know about about TNTJ.
And I found one from my orkut search.

We have got many issues to be addressed in ourselves: understanding and following Quraan and Sunaah as how it should be.

  4. I want to note “God Shape” is basic aqeedah deviation within thowhid group, your claim “kolhai visayathil entha pirivum illai” is wrong.

    • Brother, i agree there are differences. My main point is “should we break away for every difference?”. Second point is “if TNTJ people could pray Fajr & Jumua with the main community in a Masjid, why break away only for Eid prayer?”
