Knowledge, Disputes, Proofs

with one comment

There is a booklet titled “The Excellence of Knowledge” (The Superiority of the Knowledge of the Predecessors Over the Knowledge of the Successors) by Imam Ibn Rajab al Hanbali (736 – 795 AH). The subject matter is discussed in about 60 pages. Here are a few nuggets from that treatise with my comments.  Please right-click here and choose ‘Save As..’ to download or go to

Prophet (PBUH) said “A nation never went astray after being guided except by means of disputation” and then recited the verse

Quran (43:58)

The above hadeeth has been recorded by Tirmidhi (No. 3253) and Ibn Majah (No. 48)

When Imam Maalik was asked

But, this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t discuss or explain.

Let’s not deceive ourselves by thinking that any scholar who speaks eloquently, gives point-by-point rebuttal and argues a lot is more knowledgeable than a scholar who only explains things clearly with proofs. Sahabas, Tabioons, Imams didn’t speak without proofs. A “scholar” with little knowledge of what Quran & Hadeeths wont be able to give proofs, though he may be eloquent.
