Will Obama Ban Cluster Bombs?

leave a comment »

The first of more than 100 countries have begun signing a treaty to ban current designs of cluster bombs, at a conference in Oslo, Norway.

But there will be some notable — if predictable — no-shows. Israel, Russia, China and the United States all oppose the treaty. The U.S. State Department put out a statement today saying that “although we share the humanitarian concerns of states signing the [treaty], we will not be joining them.”

Here’s the official policy under President Bush, per the State Department:

U.S. government officials have stated that “the United States relies on them [cluster munitions] as an important part of our own defense strategy,” and that Washington’s preferred alternative to a ban would be “to pursue technological fixes that will make sure that these weapons are no longer viable once the conflict is over.”

Here’s my comment in the

“an important part of our own defense strategy” – Just like most of Bush Admin’s statements, i couldn’t understand this.

Can someone please explain this – How does the cluster bombs provide defense to US or its soldiers? I mean, do they want to surround their bases with these bombs?

Cluster bombs are meant to kill or tear the limbs of innocents. The armies of the world have devices to protect themselves from these. So, it is the poor farmer, innocent kids you are tearing apart. Oh yeah, this is conservative compassion.
