Emails / articles are circulating with claims that this fruit can cure cancer, that leaf will prevent heart attacks etc. Please bear in mind that the medical field is very intricate. What works wonderfully for one person may be harmful to another.

Even a simple item like Green Tea works differently. I drink a lot, and have positive results. For the type & quantity of foods that i eat, my cholesterol & weight are much less -. But, a few in-laws repeatedly got cold due to that. They feel good when they don’t take Green tea. Those who write positively about green tea should also mention the side effects, which can affect some people.

None of those emails / articles mention any side effects, negative aspects or warnings for medications. For example, Can the people who take blood thinner tablets eat that specific fruit / veg / leaf? Can people with certain allergies eat them?

Most of them also don’t cite proofs. What makes those email even more suspicious is that they have a list of products (with photos) that contain the ingredients of that fruit / vegetable / leaf.  It may be difficult to find proofs for பாட்டி வைத்தியம் / நாட்டு  மருந்து (traditional / alternative family medicines). To try these traditional medicines, i need to hear the benefits from reliable sources (like relatives who have tried those medications). Any quote from reliable doctors, labs or medical magazines would help. Without any citations, we don’t have the ability to distinguish a reliable article from an advertisement that exaggerates the benefits & hides all the defects / problems).

It is OK to eat “காட்டு ஆத்தா” (Soursop / Prickly Custard Apple) or any other fruit when you are healthy. But, if you are sick or take any medication, you better be cautious before you take those fruits / capsules.

Green teas is good. when????It is good – when one doesn’t have other problems like BP, Diabetic, Eye defect etc….

Based on the informations received by various e-mails, one of my friend took Green tea for more than 4 weeks daily usage, developed to giddiness (dizzy) and send to hospital in a stretcher admitted in hospital for 2 days.  Doctors didn’t find any problem to him till today.  Then from India the Indian  natural medicine doctors told it may be from Green tea.

The best people to convey Allah’s Guidance and commands were the prophets and messengers. The best & last of them was Muhammad (pbuh). We are not going to get any more. The next best (i.e. 2nd best) people in terms of understanding Allah’s Guidance and commands were the students of the final messenger (i.e. Companions, Sahabas). That is not just logical, but the final messenger himself told so. “The best of people is my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them”. [Bukhari and Muslim]

Nobody, in Islam, becomes “Best” without excellent knowledge. If anyone thinks that companions (Sahabas) were best in piety, worship & obedience but not in knowledge, then he doesn’t understand the importance of knowledge in Islam. He contradicts a Quranic verse “It is only those who have knowledge among His servants that fear Allah” (Qur’an 35:28). He also seem to ignore the Prophet’s sayings which instruct us to learn certain things from certain companions.

If any Aalim / Shaykh thinks that he has a better, smarter, or more knowledgeable way, here is a warning from Prophet himself: “And this Ummah will divide into seventy-three sects all of which except one will go to Hell and they (i.e. the Saved Sect) are those who are upon what I and My Companions are upon (i.e. those who follow My Way and the Way of my Companions.)” [Reported by at-Tirmidhee]

The best among the sahabas are the khaleefas (Caliphs, Khulafaa). Please see the attached file Follow the Khaleefas – Some hadeeths for hadiths ordering us to follow them. When you obey the Messenger (pbuh), you are actually obeying Allah (because, it is Allah who ordered us to obey His Messenger). When you follow the Khaleefas, you are actually following the Messenger (pbuh) (because it is the Messenger who ordered us to follow his Khaleefas). In other words, the status of the Messenger and his khaleefas come from the orders of Allah & His Messenger respectively.

A few brothers have an understanding that Prophet told us to follow his khaleefas only in political and administrative matters. This is an incorrect understanding. Those who know usool al-Fiqh & the history of fiqh wouldn’t say such a thing. Neither the Prophet, nor anyone from early generations nor the later Imams hinted anything like “follow them in political and administrative, but ignore their Islamic things”. They never distinguished religion from worldly affairs, like politics. Also, there is nothing in the hadeeths restricting the applicability of those commands only to his companions. So, how can you & I who live several generations after the khaleefas follow political and administrative decrees / rulings of Abu Bakr, Umar etc.

For those who say “We know Astronomy better than Sahabas”, the response is: Knowledge of Astronomy (or Medicine or engineering) doesn’t make a Muslim better or more deserving of Paradise. If it were the case, Muslims who would come in the future are better than us, because they’d have more knowledge of Astronomy than us. And, the best Muslims would be those who live closest to the Last Day. Is that the case? I can write more, but this should suffice for those who seek clarification.

Clarification: Islamic Shariah comprises only Qur’an and Sunnah. We are not talking about adding “Sahabas” as a 3rd source of Shariah. We are also not talking about blindly following them (Taqleed). Prophet himself made a few mistakes (e.g.: ignoring the old blind companion while doing Da’wa, being lenient to the Badr prisoners of war, etc) and Allah corrected him. These mistakes don’t reduce the status of our Prophet (pbuh). The best sahabas made some mistakes too. That doesn’t bring them down to our level. Those mistakes don’t make our Aalims equal to them.

Now, how do we follow khaleefas / caliphs when we don’t know about them? Some Muslims say that Khilafat is the solution to all of the community’s problems. How could a good Khilafat be established when people know very little about the best Khalifas? Assuming if people get political power, what kind of government would they establish?

One academic mentioned the below to Dr. ‘Ali Muhammad As-Sallaabee, author of Prophet’s and Khaleefas’ biographies:

“There now exists a chasm between Muslims and the era of the rightly guided Khaleefas. The priority of the Muslims are out of whack, with many of them knowing a great deal about the lives of scholars from recent centuries, and comparatively little about the lives of the rightly guided khaleefas. To be sure, much can be learned from the era of rightly guided Khaleefas, for it was an era that was replete with lessons about just governance, sound economic policies, military heroics, good manners, Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) – and the necessary steps that must be taken in order to establish a stable, just, upright, and God-fearing society. These are the very lessons Muslims desperately need to learn about today”. What is the legacy of the Aalim / Shyakh / Imam we know, adore and follow?

The Khaleefas accomplished phenomenal success in many areas, despite limited resources and time. For example, Abu Bakr ruled the young nation just for 2 years & 2 months – his achievements last even now. He defeated Persia and Roman empires, rooted out apostasy from the Arabian Peninsula with an all-out assault against Apostates, and compiled Quran in one book. The areas they conquered (Egypt, Sudan, Morocco, Syria, Iraq etc) are still Muslim countries. The fact that rightly guided khaleefahs achieved accomplishments of astounding magnitude that continued until today is a living proof that Allah blessed their efforts because of their knowledge, piety, steadfastness, and hard work. They wanted to please only Allaah. They had no other agenda.

What is our agenda? Whom do we want to please? And, whose understanding of Qur’an and Hadeeths do we want to follow?

இந்தச் சூழலில் தான் 1837 –இல் பகதுர்ஷா ஜஃபர் டில்லி அரியணையில் ஏரினார். மக்கள் மத்தியில் பகதுர்ஷாவுக்கு இருந்த செல்வாக்கை முறியடிக்க பிரிடடீஷார் செய்த முயற்சிகள் பல.

1847 - இல் ஆங்கில அதிகாரி கெய்த் தன் மனைவிக்கு எழுதிய கடிதத்தில், நாளை ஈத் பெருநாள். முஸ்லிம்கள் மாடுகளைக் குர்பான் (பலி) கொடுப்பர். இந்துக்களின் புனித வழிபாட்டுக்குரியதான மாடுகளை முஸ்லிம்கள் குர்பான்கொடுப்பதா? என்று இந்துக்கள் கொதித்தெழும் சூழலை உருவாக்கியுள்ளேன். எனவே நான் நாளை டில்லியில் இந்து – முஸ்லிம் கலவரத்தை எதிர்பார்த்துக்  காத்திருக்கிறேன். நான் எதிர் பார்க்கும் நல்ல செய்தியும் அதுவாகத்தான் இருக்கும். என்று பகதுர்ஷா ஆட்சியை சீர்குலைக்க இந்து - முஸ்லிம் கலவரத்தைத் தூண்டிவிடும் தன் எண்ணத்தைவடித்துள்ளான்.

 

பிரிட்டீஷாரை இந்தியாவை விட்டு விரட்ட தீவிரமாக சிந்தித்து வந்த பகதுர்ஷாவின் தலைமையில் மிகப்பெரியதிட்டம் உருவானது. இந்தியாவின் புதல்வர்களே! உறுதியுடன் முடிவு செய்து கொண்டோமேயானால், எதிரியை நொடியில் அழித்துவிடநம்மால் முடியும். அவனை முடித்து உயிரினும் அருமையான நமது நாட்டையும், சமயங்களையும், அவற்றை எதிர்பட்டுள்ளஅபாயங்களிலிருந்து காப்போம். என்ற அரசு பிரகடனத்தைத் துணிச்சலுடன் வெளியிட்டார்.

தேசத்தின சுதந்திர விரும்பிகளான ராஜாக்கள், நவாப்கள், சிறுபரப்புகளை ஆளும் தலைவர்கள் அனைவரையும் ஒருங்கிணைத்து, பிரிட்டீஷாருக்க எதிரான ஒன்றுபட்ட எதிர்ப்புக்கு போர் தொடுக்க திட்டம் வகுக்கப்பட்டது. அத்திட்டத்தைச் செயல்படுத்த 1857 மே மாதம் 31-ஆம் தேதியையும் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தனர்.

ஹிந்துக்களும் முஸ்லிம்களும் தோளோடு தோள் நின்று தேசத்தின் சுதந்திரத்திற்காகப் போர் புரிய வேண்டும் என்றும்,இந்தியா சுதந்திரம் பெற்றதும் இந்திய மன்னர்களின் தலைமையில் ஐக்கிய அரசாங்கத்தை அமைக்க வேண்டுமென்றும்முடிவெடுத்தனர்.

இம்முயற்சியில் ஒன்றுபட்ட ஜான்ஸிராணி லடசுமிபாய், நானா சாஹிப், தாந்தியா தோப், ஒளத் பேரரசி பேகம் ஹஜரத் மஹல், பீஹாரின் சிங்கம் குவர்சிங், மௌல்வி அஹமதுல்லா ஷாஹ், ஹரியானா – ராஜஸ்தான் - மகாராஷ்டிராமன்னர்கள் மே 31-ஆம் தேதிக்காக – ஒன்று பட்டு ஆங்கிலேயரை ஒழித்துக்கட்டும் அந்நாளுக்காக காத்திருந்தனர்.

ஹிந்துஸ்தான் சரித்திரத்திலேயே மிகப்பிரசித்திப் பெற்ற அந்த நாட்களை (1857 மே மாதம்) நாம் ஒரு காலத்திலும் மறக்க முடியாது. இந்துக்களும் முஸ்லிம்களும் விரோதிகளல்ல என்பதும், சகோதரர்களே என்பதும் அப்போதுதான்உலகமறிய பிரகடனம் செய்யப்பட்டது.

மாவீரரின் மதச்சார்பின்மை :

முகலாயப் பேரரசின் கடைசி அரசரான பகதூர்ஷாவின் மதச்சார்பின்மை பற்றி தெரிந்துகொள்ளவேண்டியுள்ளது.

பாடபுத்தகத்தில் முகலாயப் பேரரசின் கடைசி மன்னன் பகதூர் ஷா என்று படித்ததைத் தவிர வேறு எதுவும் நினைவில்இல்லை. ஆனால் பகதூர் ஷா ஒரு கவித்துவ உள்ளம் கொண்ட கவிஞனாகவும் மதசார்பற்றவனாகவும் சூஃபி ஞானியாகவும் ஆட்சி புரிவதற்குத் தகுதியற்றவனாகவும் தன் நம்பிக்கைகளைப் பேரரசன் என்ற அதிகாரத்தின் முலம்செயல்படுத்த முடியாதவனாகவும். ஒரு பெரிய சாம்ராஜ்ஜியத்தின் வீழ்ச்சியைக் கண்ணெதிரே பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருத்தவனாகவும்…

இந்துக்களைக் காப்பாற்றுபவனாகவும், தீவிரவாத இஸ்லாமியர்களின் கோரிக்கைகளுக்கும் உணர்வுளுக்கும் பலியாக விரும்பாமல் அவர்களிடம் மத்தியஸ்தனாகவே தன்னுடைய பங்கு அமையவேண்டும் என்று பிரக்ஞைபூர்வமாகவே ஜாபர் கருதினார்.

ஒரு சமயத்தில் 200 க்கு மேற்பட்ட முசல்மான்கள் அரண்மனைக்கு முன் கூடி ஈது பண்டிகை அன்று பசுவதை செய்யவேண்டும். என்ற கோரிக்கையை முன்வைத்தபோது முசல்மான்களின் மதம் பசுவதையை வேண்டி நிற்கவில்லை என்று பதில் தந்தார்.

ஜாபரின் அரண்மனை மருத்துவரான சாமன்லால் கிருஸ்துவ மதத்திற்கு மாறியபோது உலேமாக்கள் அவரைஅரண்மைனையில் இருந்து நீக்குமாறு கோரிக்கை வைத்தார்கள். ஆனால் ஜாபர் மருத்துவரின் மதநம்பிக்கை என்பது அவரது தனிப்பட்ட விசயம் என்றும் அதில் அவர் அவமானப்பட ஏதும் இல்லை என்றும் பதில் தந்து அவரை அரண்மனையில் இருந்து நீக்க மறுத்தார்.

தங்களுக்குள் இருந்த வேறுபாடுகளை எல்லாம் தூக்கி எறிந்து விட்டு பகதுர்ஷா தலைமையில் சுதந்திர இந்தியாயை உருவாக்க வடஇந்திய மக்கள் அன்று சிந்திய ரத்தம் கொஞ்சமல்ல.

சிப்பாய் புரட்சியில் :

1857ல் நாடு தழுவிய புரட்சி ஆங்கி லேயர்களுக்கு எதிராகக் கிளம்பியது. இந்துக்களும் முஸ்லிம்களும் ஒருங்கி ணைந்து வீரப்போரை தொடங்கினர். ஜான்ஸி ராணி லெட்சுமிபாய் போன்ற குறுநில மன்னர்களெல்லாம் ”எங்கள் இந்தியாவின் பேரரசர் இரண்டாம் பகதூர்ஷாதான்” என பிரகடனம் செய்து புரட்சியில் குதித்தனர். இதுதான் ”சிப்பாய் கலகம்” என ஆங்கிலேயர்களாலும், ”முதல் இந்திய சுதந்திரப் போர்” என இந்தியர்களாலும் போற்றப்படுகிறது. இதில் டெல்லியில் மட்டும் 27 ஆயிரம் முஸ்லிம்கள் நாட்டுக்காக உயிர் துறந்தனர்.

1857 புரட்சிக்குப் பின் பகதுர்ஷாவிடம் இருந்து டில்லியைஆங்கிலேயர் கைப்பற்றினர். டில்லியில் இருந்த முஸ்லிம்கள் தங்கள் வீடுகளையும் உடமைகளையும் அப்படியே விட்டுவெள்யேற்றப்பட்டனர். அவர்களுடைய வீடுகளை ஆங்கிலேயர்பறிமுதல் செய்தனர்.

1859 வரை அவர்கள் திரும்ப வந்து குடியேறஅனுமதிக்கப்படவில்லை. முஸ்லிம்களின் அசையா சொத்தின் மதிப்பில் நூற்றில் முப்பத்தைந்து பங்கினைத் தங்களைஎதிர்த்து போராடியதற்காக ஆங்கில அரசு தண்டமாக அபரித்தது.

மாமன்னரின் சிறை வாழ்க்கை :

மாமன்னர் பகதுர்ஷா குடும்பத்துடன் கைது செய்யப்பட்டு ஜீனத் மஹல் மாளிகையில் சிறை வைக்கப்பட்டார்.

சிப்பாய்களின் எழுச்சியின் போது தன்னுடைய மாளிகையில் ஆண்கள் பெண்கள் குழந்தைகள் என்று 52 ஆங்கிலேயர்களைத் தன்னுடைய பாதுகாப்பில் வைத்திருந்தார். சிப்பாய்கள் இவர்களைக் கண்டுபிடித்து எல்லோரையும் வெளியே இழுத்து வந்தார்கள்.

சிப்பாய்களின் இந்தச் செய்கையால் ஜாபர் திகைத்துப்போய் நின்றார். பிறகு சிப்பாய்கள் என்ன செய்ய உத்தேசித்துள்ளார்கள் என்பதை உணர்ந்த உடன் சிப்பாய்களை இந்து மற்றும் முசல்மான் என்று தனித்தனியே நிற்க உத்தரவிட்டார். பிறகு இரு சாரார்களிடமும். நிராயுதபாணியான ஆண்கள் பெண்கள் குழந்தைகளைக் கொள்வதற்கு உங்கள் மதம் அனுமதி தருகிறதா என்று அவரவர் மதகுருமார்களிடம் கேட்டுத் தெரிந்துகொள்ளுமாறு வேண்டினார்.

“இவர்கள் கொல்லப்படுவதை என்னால் அனுமதிக்க முடியாது“ என்றார்.

சிப்பாய்களின் மனம் இரங்கா நிலையைக் கண்டு ஜாபர் அழத்தொடங்கினார். அப்பாவிகளான இவர்களுடைய உயிரைப் பறிக்கவேண்டாம் என்று வேண்டிக்கொண்டார்.

“எச்சரிக்கையாய் இருங்கள் இந்த கொடூரமானச் செயலைச் செய்து முடித்தால் கடவுளின் சாபம் நம் எல்லோர்மீதும் விழும். இந்த நிராயுதபாணிகளை எதற்காக கொல்லவேண்டும்“ என்று கெஞ்சினார்.

ஆனால் அவர்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டார்கள். இத்தகைய மரபுதான் ஆங்கிலேயர்களால் நாடு கடத்தப்பட்டது. காலித்தின் கண்ணீர் மட்டுமே இங்கு மிஞ்சியிருந்தது.

சிறைச்சாலையில் ஒரு நாள்…

ஒரு நாள் காலை… காலை உணவு பெரிய தட்டுகளில் துணியால் மூடப்பட்டு எடுத்து வரப்படுகிறது. உடன் வந்த மேஜர் ஹட்ஸன் முகத்திலோ விஷமச் சிரிப்பு.

ஹட்ஸன்: பகதுர்ஷா… நீண்ட காலமாக நிறுத்தப்பட்டிருந்த கம்பெனியின் பரிசுகள் இவை! (என்றவனாக, உணவுத் தட்டுகளை மூடியிருந்த துணிகளை அகற்றுகிறான்.

அங்கே… பகதுர்ஷாவின் மகன்கள் மிர்ஜா மொஹல், கிலுருசுல்தான் இருவரின் தலைகள்! இருவரையும் சுட்டுக்கொன்று, தலைகளைவெட்டித்தட்டுகளில் ஏந்தி வந்ததோடு…

இது பிரிட்டீஷ் கம்பென்யாரின் பரிசுகள் என்று கிண்டலுடன் நிற்கிறான் ஹட்ஸன். திடநெஞ்சுடன் அவனைப் பார்த்து…)

பகதுர்ஷா: தைமூர் வம்சத் தோன்றல்கள் தமது முன்னோர்களுக்கு இவ்வாறு தான் தங்கள் புனிதத்துவத்தை நிரூபிப்பார்கள்!

(கம்பீரமான இந்த வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு அதிர்ந்த ஹட்ஸன், பகதுர்ஷா கண்களில் கண்ணீர் வராததைக் கண்டு…

ஹட்ஸன்: உமது கண்களில் என்ன… நீர் வற்றி விட்டதா?

பகதுர்ஷா: ஹட்ஸன்… அரசர்கள் அழுவதில்லை! என்று பெருமிதத்துடன் கூற… (தலை குனிந்த வாறுவெளியேறுகிறான் ஹட்ஸன்)

அன்புக் கரங்களால் அள்ளி அணைத்து உச்சி முகர்ந்த முகங்கள்… உடம்பிலிருந்து துண்டாய்! பெற்ற மனங்கள் எப்படி பதறி இருக்கும். அதனைத் தேசத்திற்கான அர்ப்பணிப்பாய் நினைத்ததால் பகதுர்ஷா கலங்கவில்லை.

ஒரு பிடி மண் :

சிப்பாய் கலகவாதிகளான புரட்சியாளர்களுக்கு உதவி செய்தார். 47 ஆங்கிலேயர்களைக் கொலை செய்தார் எனப் பல குற்றங்களைப் பகதுர்ஷாமேல் சுமத்தி, அவரை கண்கள் குருடாக்கப் பட்ட நிலையில் பர்மாவிலுள்ள ரங்கூனுக்கு பிரிட்டீஷ் அரசு நாடு கடத்தியது.

ஆங்கிலேயர் வெற்றிக்குப் பிறகு இன்று சதாம் ஹூசேன் தூக்கிலிடப்பட்டது போலவே ஜாபர் நாடு கடத்தப்பட்டார். இது ஒன்றும் பெரிய துயரம் இல்லைதான். அவரே துயரப்படவில்லை. ஒரு சூஃபி ஞானியைப் போல் அவர் தன் முன் உள்ள வாழ்க்கையைப் பெருந்தன்மையோடு ஏற்றுக்கொண்டார். சிறு குழந்தையைப் போல டெல்லிமாநகரத்தை விட்டு முதல் முறையாக வெளியே வந்து கப்பல், ரயில் போன்றவற்றைப் பார்த்து சந்தோஷப்பட்டார்.

மன்னராக இருந்தவர் என்கிற காரணத்தினால் மாதம் 600 ரூபாய் உபகாரச் சம்பளம் வழங்க பிரிட்டீஷ் அரசு முன்வந்தது.

“என் மண்ணின் செல்வத்தை எடுத்து எனக்கே கொடுப்பதற்கு நீயார்.” – என்று அதனை ஏற்க மறுத்துவிட்டார்.

கேப்டன் ஹாட்ஸன், பகதுர்ஷாவின் மூன்று இளவல்களைச் சுட்டுக் கொன்றான். அந்த உடல்கள் போலிஸ் ஸ்டேசனுக்கு முன் கழுகளுக்கு இரையாகும்படி எடுத்தெரியப்பட்டன. அவை வெகுநேரம் வரை கழுகளுக்கு ஆகாரமான பின்னர் தான் ஆற்றில் இழுத்தெரியப்பட்டன.

தாய் மண்ணில் இனி சமாதியாகும் பாக்கியம் தனக்கு கிடைக்காது என வருந்தியவராக, இறந்த பின் தன்னை அடக்கம்செய்யும் சமாதியில் தூவ ஒரு பிடி இந்திய மண்ணை கையில் அள்ளியவராக ரங்கூனுக்கு கப்பல் ஏறினார்.

சற்றும் கருணை காட்டாத பிரிட்டிஷ் அரசின் கொடூரச் செயல் கண்டு பஹதூர்ஷா ஜாஃபர் மனம் கலங்காது மரணத்தை எதிர்கொண்டார்.

1862 நவம்பர் 7-இல் தனது 92-ஆம் வயதில் ரங்கூனில் காலமானார்.

அவர் உயிர் பிரியும்போது உடல் சற்று ஆடியிருக்கலாம்.

ஆனால் அவரது தியாக மரணம் பிரிட்டிஷ் ஆட்சியை அசைத்துப் பார்த்தது என தாமஸ் லோவே தெரிவித்தார்.

போர் தந்திரம் வகுத்து எதிரிகளை விரட்டியடித்து வெற்றிவாகை சூடுவதில் ரோமானியப் பேரரசை வீழ்த்தி இந்தியாவை ஆக்ரமித்த பரங்கியர்களை விரட்டி அடித்ததுவரை உலக வரலாற்றில் அன்று முஸ்லீம்கள் தனித்து விளங்கினர்.

இந்திய மண்ணை ஓர் இந்தியனைத் தவிர வோறொருவன் ஆளத் தகுதியற்றவன் என்று நினைத்த மண்ணின் மைந்தர்களாகிய முஸ்லிம்கள் அன்னிய ஆக்ரமிப்பாளர்களை விரட்டியடித்து சுதந்திர இந்தியாவை உருவாக்க அதிக கவனம் செலுத்தினர்.

ஆர்ப்பாட்டங்கள் பேரணிகள் உப்புசத்தியாக்கிரஹங்கள் என்று அஹிம்சா வழியியிலான அனைத்துப் போராட்டங்களை நடத்திப்பார்த்தும் அவைகளுக்கு மதிப்பளிக்காத வெள்ளையர்கள் மாமன்னர் பகதூர்ஷாவின் ராணுவப் புரட்சியில் நிலை குலைந்தனர்.

The French veil (Niqab) ban lifts veil of ignorance among a section of women police. The below news item reminds me of the positive effects of Treaty of Hudaibiyya (of course, these are not comparable). Many saner voices (for legitimate reasons) cried foul at the veil ban law. God is infinitely wise.

A1: Umar Ibn Khattab (RA) was that leader. He was a genius not just in Qur’an and Hadeeths. He was a far-sighted administrator & jurist par excellence. He established judiciary as an independent branch of government in the 7th century (634 to 644 CE). Europe came up with this idea in theory only in 18th century, and then applied it only in the 19th century – just after the French revolution.

A2: Umar wrote to some governors ”…a wealthy wont desire the wealth of people, and a person of noble lineage will not be afraid of the consequences of the judgments he makes among people”

The lower house of the French Parliament approved legislation making it a crime to deny that the Turkish Army committed genocide against Armenians in the early 20th century.The French bill requires a fine of 45,000 euros and a year in jail for “those who have praised, denied or roughly and publicly downplayed genocidal crimes, crimes against humanity and war crimes.”

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey accused France on Friday of genocide against Algerians: “Approximately 15 percent of the population in Algeria have been subjected to a massacre by the French starting from 1945,” Mr. Erdogan said of the French dominion, which ended in 1962. “This is genocide.”

One has full freedom of speech to deny the existence of God, ridicule Messengers and Prophets and even burn holy books. If anybody objects, he is labelled an enemy of free  speech, or obstructionist of critical thoughts. But, the free speech and critical questioning are not allowed for a few items.

Television everywhere caused unprecedented upheavals in the society, changing moral norms, corrupting social structures, and ushering an era of unabashed hedonism and materialism. After watching the destruction caused by the glamorous new toy in their societies for decades, and the apparently unstoppable momentum with which it surged forth, many concerned Muslims decided to do something about it; in increasing numbers they want to use it to promote Islamic teachings. After all when nearly everyone who can afford it — and even many who cannot — have a television in their home, how can you ignore it?

On television, the picture is the centerpiece. It dominates and controls the entire communication and everything else is subordinate to it. Now words and pictures do not occupy the same universe of discourse. A piece of writing requires one to go beyond the shape of the letters to read them. It requires thought to understand what is being said. To concentrate on a critical idea we sometimes close our eyes or even when they are open we pay no attention to what is visible. We develop insights by opening our inner eyes, so to speak, and turning away from the sights. But in the presence of television you cannot close eyes or ignore what is in front of them. Before you can begin to think deeply about an idea, there is another eye-catching picture on the screen to distract you. Thus television does not only not require reflection; it does not even permit it. With beautiful imagery and a continuous display of dazzling pictures it shuts off our ability to engage in deep thoughts.

That is why little children can spend hours in front of the mini screen but get tired very quickly after looking at a picture-less page of text. The disability to think and process textual information is increased with continued watching. Therefore generations nurtured on television have such a short attention span. Television can titillate, it cannot teach. It appeals to the emotions, not the intellect. It can bring images into our heart, not ideas into our mind.

Schultze notes that televangelism promoted a new religion whose pillars were selfishness, individualism, and materialism — not to mention superstition in the form of the health and wealth gospel.Some would call it the ultimate blasphemy. In Richard F. Collman’s words “The ultimate blasphemy of a consumerist culture is its desire to consume God”. This is what happens when religion is sold in the entertainment marketplace.

There is no difference between Bush & Obama in foreign policies, not much difference in domestic policies, and a lot of differences in communication. Steve was a master communicator, a great story teller and a tech genius. I learnt quite a lot of presentation techniques from his presos. Steve never talked technical details, his presos didnt have much text (Most of the times, it was just one picture).

What do speakers tell in a convocation address? Plenty of do this & don’t do that. Steve Jobs told three personal stories at Stanford. In 2005, in a moving address at Stanford University after receiving surgery for pancreas cancer, he reflected on his own mortality, urging his audience: ‘Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life’.

His third story started like this: ‘When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.’

The last part of his speech was almost like a preacher’s: ‘No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life. It is life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.’

In 2009, there were fewer than 300 terrorist incidents in Europe, a 33 percent decline from the previous year. The vast majority of these incidents (237 out of 294) were conducted by indigenous European separatist groups, with another forty or so attributed to leftists and/or anarchists. According to the report, a grand total of one (1) attack was conducted by Islamists. Put differently, Islamist groups were responsible for a whopping 0.34 percent of all terrorist incidents in Europe in 2009. In addition, the report notes, ‘the number of arrests relating to Islamist terrorism (110) decreased by 41 percent compared to 2008, which continues the trend of a steady decrease since 2006.’

Newspapers & televisions initially reported “terrorist attack” in Oslo, Norway (at that time only 6 or 7 people were confirmed killed). When it became known that the attacker was a “Fundamentalist Christian” (in the attacker’s own words), the word terrorism disappeared. It became “massacre”, though 77 people were confirmed killed.

Here is a comment from NY Times, about that newspaper’s usage of the term.

I must say that as a Norwegian I feel somewhat angry that this cowardly action of terrorism has been downgraded to “massacre” in the US media now. Blowing up government buildings, targeting innocents, callously gunning down, in a most pre-mediated manner, a huge number of youths. What more do you need to call it terrorism?

And I note that on Friday before the perpetrator was caught, it _was_ terror – even though much fewer people had been confirmed killed.

Get your language straight: This was terror and _not_ a massacre. I will not speculate as to why the change of language was decided upon but it reflects badly on an otherwise outstanding newspaper.

At the Washington Post,  Jennifer Rubin quoted the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies’ Thomas Joscelyn and AEI scholar Gary Schmitt to say that the attacks were the result of Islamic terrorism. She then concluded the “jihadist” attack on Oslo means the U.S. shouldn’t cut military spending: “This is a sobering reminder for those who think it’s too expensive to wage a war against jihadists.”

The Atlantic Wire notes that “many in the media were left reeling over the fact that others were so quick to report and comment that Muslims were involved, before there was clear evidence.”. Jared Diamond wrote the book “Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed“

Summary of Jared Diamond’s argument: Human societies and smaller groups make disastrous decisions for a whole sequence of reasons: failure to anticipate a problem, failure to perceive it once it has arisen, failure to attempt to solve it after it has been perceived, and failure to succeed in attempts to solve it.

So what lessons does Diamond draw from his case studies, and what insights might we glean for the conduct of foreign policy? Here are a few thoughts that occurred to me as I finished the book.

First, he argues that sometimes societies fail to anticipate an emerging problem because they lack adequate knowledge or prior experience with the phenomenon at hand. Primitive societies may not have recognized the danger of soil depletion, for example, because they lacked an adequate understanding of basic soil chemistry. A society may also fail to spot trouble if the main problem it is facing recurs only infrequently, because the knowledge of how to detect or deal with the problem may have been forgotten. As he emphasizes, this is especially problematic for primitive societies that lack written records, but historical amnesia can also occur even in highly literate societies like our own.

By analogy, one could argue that some recent failures in U.S. foreign policy were of this sort. Hardly anybody anticipated that U.S. support for the anti-Soviet mujaheddin in Afghanistan would eventually lead to the formation of virulent anti-American terrorist groups, in part because the U.S. leaders didn’t know very much about that part of the world and because public discourse about U.S. policy in the Middle East is filled with gaping holes. Similarly, the people who led us into Iraq in 2003 were remarkably ignorant about the history and basic character of Iraqi society (as well as the actual nature of Saddam’s regime). To make matters worse, the U.S. military had forgotten many of the lessons of Vietnam and had to try to relearn them all over again, with only partial success.

Second, societies may fail to detect a growing problem if their leaders are too far removed from the source of the trouble. Diamond refers to this as the problem of “distant managers,” and it may explain why U.S. policymakers often make decisions that seem foolish in hindsight. As I’ve noted here before, one problem facing U.S. foreign policymakers is the sheer number and scope of the problems they are trying to address, which inevitably forces them to rely on reports from distant subordinates and to address issues that they cannot be expected to understand very well. Barack Obama doesn’t get to spend the next few years learning Pashto and immersing himself in the details of Afghan history and culture; instead, he has to make decisions based on what he is being told by people on the ground (who may or may not know more than he does). Unfortunately, the latter have obvious reasons to tell an upbeat story, if only to make their own efforts look good. If things are going badly, therefore, the people at the top back in Washington may be the last to know.
